Future of Cycling in British Columbia
Cycling BC is the provincial governing body for the sport of cycling. Its mission is to “Foster quality competition from the grass roots through to high performance levels, and encourage partnerships to grow participation in the sport of cycling.” Many in the cycling community believe that Cycling BC is not fulfilling this mandate, and its principal function has become to serve as a sports administrator, solely responsible for enforcing policy, rules, and regulations. A group of like-minded individuals, with a passion to see cycling grow and succeed in this province, has been organised to help return Cycling BC to its mission statement, and become an organization that prides itself on building the sport from the grassroots, fostering growth, supporting clubs, and being an active leader at all levels. The group, the Future of Cycling in British Columbia, firmly believes that Cycling BC must become an organization that champions development at all levels, for all disciplines, and fosters lifelong participation in the sport. To this end, the Group has assembled a slate of like-minded candidates for four open board of director positions that will be elected at the upcoming Cycling BC annual general meeting. The candidates, with the support of the Group, are putting together a plan focused on four specific areas: Development, Participation, Clubs, and Communications. Development Cycling BC has a world class set of coaches and athletes to develop and train aspiring world class athletes, especially youth. These resources form the foundation for Cycling BC’s future and they must be strongly supported and developed. The board of directors must have oversight over these programs to ensure that funding is correctly allocated, all disciplines and categories are being reached, and development targets are being achieved. Participation and Race/Event Calendar A key part of Cycling BC’s mission statement is to grow participation in the sport of cycling this should involve racing & sportive style events. Cycling BC must focus on making events available and accessible to all levels in order to increase participation across all categories throughout the season. The calendar requires a strong foundation to ensure that it is stable from year to year. Cycling BC needs take an active leadership role to ensure that a full calendar is achieved and that significant events (e.g. BC Championships) are held every year, and are open and accessible to all categories. Clubs Clubs have long been the backbone of cycling in British Columbia. The candidates put forward by the Group will be committed to working with clubs and promoting their development at all levels and within all disciplines of the sport. They will actively support and reward clubs who host races/events and help develop novice/youth racers. Communication Cycling BC has a responsibility to its relationship with its membership, stakeholders, and the public. In order to maintain and strengthen these relationships the organization must improve its communication and transparency with each of these groups. With the goal of ensuring that communication and relationships are a priority, the focus areas will be:
The mission of the Future of Cycling in British Columbia group is to commit resources and efforts into ensuring that development activities are resourced and funded, clubs are supported, and that there are open lines of communication with the membership and other stakeholders. Ultimately, our end goal, as it is for any amateur sport governing body, is an Olympic Gold Medal. Cycling BC has enormous potential, and we must take action to ensure that it is driven along on the path towards long term success. Please attend the AGM on December 2nd and engage with the organization to ensure it ends up on the right path. Change within Cycling BC will only occur under the governance of a like-minded Board of Directors committed to that change. Four board positions are up for re-election at the AGM on Sunday December 2nd, a slate of candidates who are all committed to the goal of initiating positive change at Cycling BC. We are asking for your support of the following individuals for the available positions. Please remember that an annual general meeting is about giving people a choice. Please get out and vote for whomever you support and think will provide the right leadership. |
